CHANGELOG - Step 7 Wallet Generation Feature
[Version 2.0.0] - 2026-01-01
Added - Automatic Wallet Generation (Step 7)
Major Feature: Wallet Auto-Generation During USB Flash
The cold wallet USB flash process now automatically generates a ready-to-use wallet during the flash operation, eliminating the need for manual wallet creation after flashing.

Security Implementation
- Encryption Algorithm: Argon2i + XSalsa20-Poly1305
- Key Derivation: Argon2i (memory-hard, resistant to brute force)
- Symmetric Encryption: XSalsa20-Poly1305 (authenticated encryption)
- Memory Safety: Immediate keypair deletion after use with GC
- File Permissions: 0o600 (owner read/write only) for keypair.json
- Password Protection: Required for all wallet operations

User-Facing Changes
Before This Update
-
Flash USB drive (6 steps)
-
Mount USB on computer
-
Run separate wallet generation script
-
Set password and generate keypair
-
Wallet ready to use
Total Time: ~10-15 minutes
Complexity: Medium (requires technical knowledge)
Steps: 5 manual operations
After This Update
-
Flash USB drive (7 steps, includes wallet generation)
-
Wallet immediately ready to use!
Total Time: ~5-8 minutes
Complexity: Easy (automated process)
Steps: 1 command
Benefits
User Experience
- 50% time reduction in setup process
- Immediate usability - can receive SOL right away
- Lower complexity - no separate wallet creation step
- Reduced error rate - automated process
- Better onboarding - simpler for new users
Security
- No compromise - same encryption as manual method
- Password protection - enforced during flash
- Memory safety - automatic cleanup
- Secure permissions - automatically set
- Overwrite protection - prevents accidental loss
Operational
- Single command - one operation instead of many
- Consistent results - automated execution
- Error handling - graceful failure modes
- Cross-platform - works on Windows and Linux
- Backward compatible - can still use manual method
Breaking Changes
None - This is a fully backward-compatible enhancement.
Existing workflows continue to function:
- Manual wallet creation still available
- Existing wallets can still be loaded
- All APIs remain unchanged
- Configuration options unchanged
Migration Guide
No migration needed - This is an additive feature.
For users who want the new behavior:
-
Run the flash process as normal
-
Wallet will be automatically generated in Step 7
-
Public key will be displayed on completion
For users who prefer manual wallet creation:
-
When prompted to overwrite existing wallet in Step 7, choose "No"
-
Generate wallet manually later as before
Testing
Recommended Test Cases
- Flash USB on Windows - verify wallet created
- Flash USB on Linux - verify wallet created
- Check keypair.json is properly encrypted
- Verify pubkey.txt contains valid address
- Test password prompt and validation
- Attempt transaction with generated wallet
- Test overwrite protection with existing wallet
- Verify public key display after flash
- Check file permissions on Unix systems
- Test with air-gapped offline signing
Known Issues
None currently identified.
